Consumption of penicillins in the community, European Union/European Economic Area, 1997–2017

Abstract Objectives Data on consumption of penicillins in the community were collected from 30 EU/European Economic Area (EEA) countries over two decades. This article reviews temporal trends, seasonal variation, presence change-points and changes composition main subgroups penicillins. Methods For period 1997–2017, data penicillins, i.e. β-lactam antibacterials, (ATC group J01C), aggregated at level active substance, using WHO ATC/DDD methodology (ATC/DDD index 2019). Consumption was expressed DDD per 1000 inhabitants day packages day. analysed based ATC-4 subgroups, presented as compositional changes. Results In 2017, varied by a factor 4.9 between with highest (Spain) lowest (the Netherlands) consumption. An increase which not statistically significant, observed 1997 2003 up to 2010. A decrease, 2010 onwards. Proportional combinations including β-lactamase inhibitors (J01CR) increased during coincided decrease proportional extended-spectrum (J01CA) narrow-spectrum (J01CE).
